NYRR Run for the Future is a free seven-week scholarship program that teaches 11th grade high school girls how to run. This unique opportunity is designed for young women who have not previously participated in organized sports. With support from NYRR’s coaching staff, NYRR Run for the Future participants are introduced to the sport of running. Participants are taught running technique, nutrition, and goal setting so they can develop the ability, confidence, and motivation to be active for life.
At the conclusion of the program, the runners participate in their first 5K (3.1 miles) race. Those accepted into NYRR Run for the Future who fulfill the program requirements and maintain an 80% attendance rate will receive a $2,000 college scholarship.
Young women are encouraged to apply for NYRR Run for the Future if they live in New York City; are in 11th grade at a public, publicly-funded, or parochial high school in New York City during the 2018–2019 school year or are working toward their New York State High School Equivalency Diploma; plan on attending an accredited two- or four-year college or university in fall 2020; are under 20 years of age; and have had little to no experience participating in physical activities.
NYRR Run for the Future offers a spring training season and a summer training season. Applicants may apply to both seasons but will only be selected to participate in one season if accepted.
The spring training season runs from April 15 to June 1 and meets three times a week (Mondays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) with practices in Central Park.
The summer training season runs from July 8 to August 23 and meets three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) for two-hour practices in Central Park. Morning and evening practice times are available.
To be considered for NYRR Run for the Future, high school 11th-grade girls must complete the online application and ask an adult, such as a teacher, counselor, or employer, to upload a signed letter of recommendation. Recommendations from family members will not be accepted.
