April Brown is a RRCA Level 1 Certified Coach and has been mentoring and training runners in the New York City area for more than seven years. Her professional career has focused on philanthropic work, especially in the areas of health. She uncovered her love for running while working at the American Cancer Society, recruiting and cheering on dedicated athletes running to make a difference in the lives of others. In 2009, she decided to join this dedicated group and ran her first half-marathon and marathon that year on behalf of the American Cancer Society.
Since that time, she has run four marathons and 15 half-marathons. From 2011 to 2014, April was one of the running coaches of Team “LUNA Chix NYC” sponsored by Clif Bar & Co., dedicated to training women to run their first competitive race. LUNA Chix coached over 200 new and novice runners to meet their race goals by teaching running form, speed and endurance, and best of all, introducing new athletes to this wonderful community of running.
In addition to running, April is an active cyclist, yoga enthusiast, and boot-camp warrior with a few Spartan races under her belt. She strongly believes that taking time to include other sports that you enjoy makes you a stronger runner.
What is your favorite place to run in New York City?
Anywhere along water—every summer I especially look forward to the boardwalk in Rockaway well before the beach goers come out (and also as some people are just going home from the night before!)
What is your favorite NYRR race?
Hands down the TCS New York City Marathon and the Airbnb Brooklyn Half
What is your personal running motto?
Forget about everyone else—it’s only you against you—embrace it and enjoy the view
