Running Together to Fight Lung Cancer

With spring in full swing, more than 8,000 runners started their day in Central Park at the Run as One (4M) Presented by JPMorgan Chase. The event, first run in 2007, raises funding and awareness in the fight against lung cancer. It's run in memory of former Chase Manhattan Bank chairman Tom Labrecque, a lifelong non-smoker who passed away from lung cancer at age 62.

Runners had the chance to honor their loved ones who had fought or are fighting cancer by writing messages on a whiteboard wall at the pre- and post-race festival.

Several groups of runners designed T-shirts and jerseys to honor their loved ones during their run.

Once the race was underway, Fikadu Girma Teferi was the first man to cross the finish line, winning in 18:53, while Meseret Ali Basa led the women's race in 22:34.

Starting just after the four-mile run, a 1.4-mile Health Walk gave even more members of the community a way to enjoy the morning while getting fit.

At the post-race festival, Tom Labrecque, Jr., a member of the NYRR Board of Directors, took to the Rumsey Playfield stage to hand out awards to the top finishers as well as a variety of exciting prize giveaways.

And with warmer weather on the way, runners could build upon strong runs today to pursue even more personal bests later this season.
